Time is money, as they say, and even small ways of saving time can really add up. That’s why you may be tempted to rush through your denture care routine by brushing your dentures while they’re still in your mouth rather than removing them for a more thorough cleaning. But this isn’t always the best idea. Brushing your dentures while in use can cause you to miss food particles, plaque, and the surfaces where your dentures sit on your arches.
If you’re in a hurry and needing a quick touch up, brushing your dentures while they’re in place is better than nothing, but always be sure to clean them thoroughly twice a day. If you do choose to brush them in place, follow these guidelines for success:
- Use a soft bristled toothbrush and gently brush your dentures as you would your natural teeth
- Do not use toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive and damage your dentures
- Rinse your dentures well once your brushing is complete.
Regular Denture Care
While brushing your dentures when they’re still in your mouth is a great way to freshen up between deep cleanings, a more thorough scrub-down is required at least twice a day, but don’t fret! It may be a bit more involved, but proper denture care is quite easy!
- Fill a basin about halfway with warm water, and place a towel in the bottom for cushioning
- Remove your dentures and rinse them
- Gently scrub them with a soft toothbrush on all surfaces, including the teeth as well as the gum portion and the inside where your dentures contact your gums. Be sure to remove all traces of denture adhesive, food bits, and plaque.
- If you notice a buildup of tartar beginning to form, soak them in a solution made of one part vinegar, four parts water.
- Rinse again
- While your mouth is empty, brush your gums and any remaining natural teeth with toothpaste and a toothbrush, and rinse well.
- Reinsert your dentures.
If you are heading to bed for the night, soak your clean dentures in a solution of either denture soak or plain water. This will keep them from drying out, which can cause warping or cracking over time.
Timing Is Everything
Remember, while it may be a little bit faster to skip a few steps and just brush your dentures in your mouth, don’t rely on this method in place of regular care. Ensuring their maximum longevity requires proper care and cleaning, which will save you time and money in the long run!
